Making Race Out Of nOthing: PsychOlOgically cOnstRained

چکیده
Race is one of the most common variables in the social sciences, used to draw correlations between racial groups and numerous other important variables such as education, health care outcomes, aptitude tests, wealth, employment and so forth. But where concern with race once reflected the view that races were biologically real, many, if not most, contemporary social scientists have abandoned the idea that racial categories demarcate substantial, intrinsic biological differences between people. This, in turn, raises an important question about the significance of race in those social sciences: If there is no biological basis of race, why are racial categories useful to social scientists? More specifically, in virtue of what are racial categories a successful basis of informative, important social scientific generalizations? 1 We'll call this social science's race puzzle. A main aim of this chapter is to set out the sort of solution that has typically been given to this race puzzle, and suggest some ways in which such a solution might be extended and improved. We begin by developing what we will call the standard answer: Racial categories are not biological groupings, but are rather social roles of some sort. These social roles are produced and sustained by cultural understandings,

Youth and the Race
The author of "Mind in the Making" has scored another triumph and has given us in "Youth and the Race" a psychologically truthful picture of the real boy. "The role which racial instincts play in the emotions, intellect, and will of children," says Professor Swift in his preface, "has been the subject of many investigations in recent years by those interested in the psychology of childhood. The...
متن کاملConstrained consumable resource allocation in alternative stochastic networks via multi-objective decision making
Many real projects complete through the realization of one and only one path of various possible network paths. Here, these networks are called alternative stochastic networks (ASNs). It is supposed that the nodes of considered network are probabilistic with exclusive-or receiver and exclusive-or emitter. First, an analytical approach is proposed to simplify the structure of t...
متن کاملA THEORETICALLY CORRECT RESOURCE USAGE VISUALIZATION FOR THE RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEM
The cumulative resource constraints of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) do not treat the resource demands as geometric rectangles, that is, activities are not necessarily assigned to the same resource units over their processing times. In spite of this fact, most papers on resource-constrained project scheduling mainly in the motivation phase use a strip packing of re...
متن کاملAn Evolutionary Algorithm Based on a Hybrid Multi-Attribute Decision Making Method for the Multi-Mode Multi-Skilled Resource-constrained Project Scheduling Problem
This paper addresses the multi-mode multi-skilled resource-constrained project scheduling problem. Activities of real world projects often require more than one skill to be accomplished. Besides, in many real-world situations, the resources are multi-skilled workforces. In presence of multi-skilled resources, it is required to determine the combination of workforces assigned to each activity. H...
متن کاملPolice-citizen encounters and field citations Do encounter characteristics influence ticketing?
Purpose – To provide an empirical analysis of what influences police use of field citations (tickets) against citizens in nontraffic and traffic encounters. Design/methodology/approach – The research was conducted using systematic social observations of police-citizen encounters in Cincinnati, Ohio, from April 1997 to 1998. Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the effects of...
